How the Program Works

In groups of four, students in speaking intensive courses take part in a two-hour training session with a Speaking Fellow outside of class.  At the professor’s request, these groups may also take part in advanced training in a specific area, such as negotiating or presenting as a team.

In the initial session with a Speaking Fellow, students learn to recognize the dynamics of a presentation environment, including the leadership role of the presenter.  They review the fundamentals of presentation-giving, prepare a mock presentation in real time, and then practice engaging an audience of their peers, with personalized coaching from the Speaking Fellow.  Sessions are videotaped so that students can view their progress.

Advanced sessions offer specialized training, which often involves group and/or individual exercises, and additional presentation practice.

All sessions are group-based.
